OK! Here are some of the things you need to know before you contact us. Please read it all, many of your questions are answered here.
Pat and Trisha are located on Long Island, New York. We don't ship our babies. We'll be happy to meet customers anywhere within 100 miles of our home in Mastic Beach. A delivery fee will apply. If you can't come to our home or meet us within 100 miles, then we probably won't be able to sell you a hedgehog. Please contact us to inquire about our delivery fees.
AS OF 10/7/12: We will no longer be scheduling delivery appointments without a 50% payment on the total price of the animal & delivery fee, or animal & cage & delivery fee. We have been stood up for deliveries many times, and it will not be happening again. If you want us to bring you your hedgehog, we will require half of the total amount before we schedule the delivery. THIS MONEY WILL NOT BE REFUNDED IF YOU DON'T SHOW UP. If you change your mind or if your situation suddenly changes and you can't take a hedgehog, it's OK, we understand. But CALL ME OR EMAIL ME the day before the delivery. If you contact me before the delivery, I will refund your deposit. If I load up my car and drive to a meeting place and you aren't there, you will not be getting a refund. PERIOD.
Hedgehogs are currently illegal to own in several states and municipalities. New York City doesn't allow them, although the rest of the state does. Pennsylvania and California do not allow them. There are others, but it's YOUR JOB to find out if they are legal where you live. This isn't hard to do, if you remember that Google is your friend.
We will guarantee the health of our baby hedgehogs for a period of two weeks after purchase. If your pet becomes ill during this time, we will A) accept return of the animal for a full refund of the price of the animal; B) take the animal back into our care to treat it, and return it when treatment is complete; or C) refund you for the cost of treatment by your veterinarian, UP TO the amount you paid for the hedgehog. The animal must have been housed and fed properly - see below.
Cages cannot be refunded under any circumstances.
ABSOLUTELY NO TUBS OR TANKS PLEASE! If you keep your hedgehog in a tank, aquarium, or plastic storage bin, this health guarantee is void, and I *will* be checking.
ABSOLUTELY NO "HEDGEHOG FOOD" PLEASE! If you have been feeding your hedgehog any brand of commercial "hedgehog food," we won't be responsible for it when he gets sick. That stuff is garbage, and we told you so when you bought him.
If the baby should become ill during those two weeks, and you have been taking proper care of him, NOTIFY US IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait a day, or two days, or five days. Call us the moment you see anything wrong, FOR EXAMPLE, failure to eat or drink, sluggishness, discharge from nose or eyes, diarrhea, or unexplained sores. We've seen all of this and more, and we may be able to recommend a remedy for him. If not, we will take him back for a full refund, or give you first pick of the next available babies. You'll have to show us how you've been caring for him. If you already adore your baby and want to keep him, we will treat him ourselves or take him to our own veterinarian for treatment at our expense, and then give your pet back to you once he's on the mend. If you prefer to take him to your own vet, we will refund all or part of the vet bills, but only up to the price you paid for the hedgehog. There are vets out there who grossly overcharge their clients, especially exotic animals. Ours doesn't. We won't overpay for treatment we could have provided for less. And yes, I will need to see a copy of the bill!
After the two week period, we can't provide a refund or exchange, but we will always be available to provide advice and support for the life of your pet, or to help you find a qualified exotics vet if the need arises. As I say with the health guarantee, don't wait to contact us! We can help, but only if you call us!
SURRENDER & REHOMING
If at any time during the animal's life, if you can no longer care for him and need to rehome him, PLEASE get in touch with us. We will happily take one of our babies back and offer him for adoption, or we can help you to find him a new home with someone on our waiting list and put you in touch with them, and you can work out the details with that person on your own. PLEASE don't put my little sweetie on Craigslist! That's a terrible way to find people to adopt animals.
ALL SURRENDERS MUST BE BROUGHT TO US, REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU LIVE AND WHETHER WE DELIVERED TO YOU WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE HEDGEHOG. If you don't drive, ask your friends or family for a ride, or take public transportation.
PLEASE NOTE: When we take a hedgehog back from you to rehome him, it costs us money. We house and care for him until we find him a home. We're more than happy to help, but please don't ask us to pay you. After the two-week grace period, we will not be refunding any part of what you paid for the hedgehog.
Our babies cost between $100 and $225, depending on their coloration. Standard grays would be $200, a pinto, cinnamon, or other fancy color would be $225, and an albino would be $100. The prices we charge for our hedgehogs are the same as or less than what you would pay at a typical pet store, and if you buy from a pet store, you will be buying an unsocialized and possibly severely ill and neglected hedgehog. You won't even know how old he really is. The people who work in the store won't even know, and they'll tell you he's three months old when he's really a year and a half. That's a big difference. Here, you know where every baby has come from, and you get a receipt with his birthday right on it. He's been played with and loved for all his little life. When you look at it that way, you'll see that our prices are fair and reasonable, but asking us to discount them is not. So don't ask. The only discount we will ever offer is for a repeat customer, or a referral from a previous customer. Period.
Hedgehog cage setups are $120.
Effective immediately, we will no longer accept any form of electronic payment. The ONLY exception to this is reservation fees and deposits. We will not accept Chase, Visa, or any other type of electronic payment when you come to pick up your hedgehog or if we deliver to you. We also do not accept credit cards. Have cash ready. We'll take a check if you twist our arms, but we prefer cash.
We do not require a deposit to be placed on the waiting list. We don't ask for any money up front if you are able to come pick out your baby within a week of being notified that they are available. If you cannot pick up your baby within one week of our notification, we can hold one for you, but we will require a non-refundable reservation fee of $25 to do so. NO ANIMAL WILL BE RESERVED until we have received your $25 reservation fee. We accept and prefer PayPal, but if you must you can mail a check. The reservation fee amount will be deducted from the total price of your purchase when you pick up your pet, but if you don't show up or if you change your mind, we will not be refunding your deposit. Please be sure you really want this hedgehog, folks! It's perfectly OK if you don't, but I keep having people stop answering their emails and texts and voice mails, and I won't be chasing anyone down anymore. We will offer refunds ONLY if WE cannot come through - read below for more on that.
If for any reason WE can't hold up our end of the deal - for example, if we decide not to breed, if the breeding is unsuccessful, or if there aren't enough babies for everyone - then we will happily refund your deposit. This is the ONLY time we will EVER refund a deposit.
Please also see our new delivery deposit policy above, under "Deliveries."
We ask all potential customers to provide four pieces of information: Your full name, an email address that you check regularly, your street address, and a telephone number where you can be reached. There is a reason why we ask for this information. When a baby becomes available for you, we really want you to have him. If we can't reach you, we'll have to move on to the next person on the list, and you'll lose your place on the list. Neither of us wants that, right? So please, give me a way to get ahold of you. We aren't going to mail you anything or sell your info, and I'm not going to call you drunk at 3 AM, I promise.
Why do we need your address? I've been asked why I need all your contact information. Well, I need to be able to contact you, for one thing! Also, on a more serious note, when people come to pick up their babies, they are coming to our home. I don't want to make it sound scary, but in this day and age, we need to know who is coming here. We'll never send you anything in the mail, we won't call you a million times, we just want to be able to reach you, and we want everyone to stay safe. When you compare that to the third degree you get from some breeders, it's not asking a lot, but I can tell you that no one will be placed on the list without full contact information. If you don't want to give me your information, why would I give you mine? Just something to think about.
Once I send out a notification email, you have 48 hours to respond. If I don't hear from you, your name will be removed from the waiting list. So check your email, and answer it. I can't stress this enough. We don't leave you hanging, don't do it to us.
Many questions about how to care for your new baby are answered on our care sheet, here on the site. You'll also be provided with a printed copy when you pick up the baby. If you think of a question that is not addressed in the care sheet, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately. We will be more than happy to provide our full support to you, for as long as your hedgehog is with you.
